How to Get to Calabar

This is a detailed description when coming from major cities in Nigeria. You can also use the map here.

All participants from Ghana would be received by a GCI staff on arrival into Nigeria. Transportation to Calabar would be arranged by GCI transport committee.

Before you leave home

Ensure that you visit a doctor for proper medical check up. If possible come with other medically recommended medications. Also endeavor to come with all necessary items for your personal care including a cardigan.

Arts festival/Tours in Calabar

There are a number of tours around Calabar. This would be coordinated by the Cross River State Tourism Board from the 2nd of December. Charges for the tours would be released by 30th of April, 2007 and all payments must be made prior to the event for easy arrangements by the committee. You can check the site again by 30th of April, 2007.

Useful Information for Your Stay

Banks

Bank hours vary depending on the bank as well as on its location. Generally, banks are open from 8am-4pm, Monday to Friday. Some banks also open on Saturday.

Business Hours

Most stores are open from Monday through Saturday from 9am to 6pm and sometimes on Sunday as well.

Clothing

On the 30th of November participants are expected to wear the conference GCI uniforms and on the 1st of December participants would wear the GCI 2007 T-Shirts on anything comfortable

Electrical appliances

The electrical voltage system in Nigeria is 110-250 volts. Those traveling from Ghana will need a proper voltage converter and adapter in order to operate their electrical appliances.

Health Insurance

Participants are advised to obtain health insurance before leaving their home province or country. There are no compulsory health requirements for entry into Nigeria.

Language

There is one official language in Nigeria: English.

Local time

Nigeria is 1hr ahead of Ghana.

Money

The money system in Nigeria is based on Nigerian Naira. International currency exchange services are available at various points in the banks and currency exchange outlets located throughout the city, but it is advised to convert your monies into U.S dollars for easy transactions.

Transportation

First aid: First aid services are provided by The Ministry of Health in Calabar. To access first aid services, talk to any conference volunteer and they will provide you with directions.

Health Clinic

During regular conference/festival hours, a Health Clinic will be available. The information on the venue would be sent to you on your time table after your registration.

Sexually transmitted infections: We do not want you to leave Calabar with an unwelcome infection! Always practice safer sex to reduce your risk of a sexually transmitted infection (STI).
