A Report on the Activities of the 3-day Training and HIV/AIDS Interaction Among Youths in Ifite-Awka
Day 1- 4/10/06
Introduction
The arrival of the participants and their registration having been done, the training session was declared open with an opening prayer by Afolabi Olusayo, a peer Educator Trainer under the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC). An Introduction of participants was made to them by the completion of the assessment form by the participants then the drawing of the ground rules by the participant which included no noise during lectures, being punctual at training, switching off or vibrating of handsets and as long question only after speeches / lectures.
With the ground rules came the expectations of the participants, which among them were being able to pass the message, acquiring more knowledge on HIV/AIDS in order to be a good educator on HIV/AIDS eradication, meeting people from different backgrounds, know about their views on HIV/AIDS and its effect, being able to learn more on hour to be free on life over some certain precautions.
The filling of the assessment forms by participants was facilitated by Ada Onyejike, the Executive Director GCAF.
Lecture 1
The first lecture was on the topic: Human Anatomy given by Afolabi the objective of the lecture were, identifying 2 external and internal male and female reproductive organ, explaining menstrual cycle, describing how menstruation occurs, defining pregnancy and conception and stating how pregnancy occurs etc.
Lecture 2
The second lecture was on the topic: what are STIS and mode of transmission of STIs by Makinde Alexandra with the objective; definition of STIS including HIV and complications. After the lectures came question, discussions and then various organizations and groups present shared their experiences then lunch was served and a vote of thanks by the Executive Director. Then a closing prayer was said.
Day 2 -5/10/06
A recap of the day 1 was made by the rapoutuers which had some flows and was corrected by the participants. After the recap came the first lecture on the mode of transmission, prevention, tuberculosis and HIV by Malinde Alexandria with the objective of knowing what is HIV, AIDS/ signs and symptoms of HIV/AIDS, how is HIV contracted, how HIV is not contracted, who is at risk, the HIV test, meaning of the test result.
Prevention of HIV/AIDS
After the 1st lecture came a speech / lecture by the Executive Director on Attitudes, behaviors, values and self esteem among young people. She discussed at length on these issues after which the participants were divided into three groups and they were given different topics to discuss. One of the groups discussed on what can be done, another on the problems and the other on strategies. Each group after discussion presented their findings. A vote of thanks by the Executive Director and a prayer by Chidi (Mbe) brought the day to an end.
Day 3- 06/10/06
After the registration of the participants for the day came a recap of the previous day’s activities by the rapoutuers. After the report came the lecture on VCCT by Representative from the Heart to Heart Centre Amaku General Hospital Awka. They dealt extensively on Confidentiality, Counseling, Counseling skills, care support of PLWHA, referrals and empathy the lectures/ Guest speakers were Dr Afam .J and Mrs Ekezie N.
After the lecture came question and answers by the participants. After the lecture the speech/lecture from the representative of FHI/GHAIN -Dr. Bishop Eze who spoke on “Effective Communication”. Questions and Answers came after the lecture. Participants talked about their work plans and dates. A group photograph was taken by all present (participants, representatives from GHAIN and Heart to Heart Centre, GCAF) the presentation of the report followed alongside with lunch then a closing prayer and Departure of participants.
